“Do
not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the
love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the cravings of
sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes
not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away,
but the man who does the will of God lives forever.” – 1 John 2:15-17
Going Somewhere or
Going Nowhere?
Christian writer Max Lucado tells a story about
an airplane ride that goes something like this: As he was boarding a plane for
a cross country flight, he approached his assigned seat to find a surprise. The
man in the seat next to him had removed his airline seat and replaced it with a
soft leather recliner and many other additions. Sitting there in his
comfortable bathrobe and slippers he proceeded to demonstrate to Max all the
wonderful features: a fully stocked refrigerator, drink dispenser, a large
screen TV and a selection of movies, full internet access. The list goes on.
His fellow passenger had determined to make himself the most comfortable
passenger on the plane. Considering the great expense that the man must have
taken for an upgrade of this magnitude, Max asks him, “So what will you do when
we reach our destination and you have to leave the airplane?”
“Leave the plane?” the
man replied, “Why would I ever do that? I’m staying right here!”
Many people mistakenly believe that
this world is all that there is, and surround themselves with many comforts and
conveniences. Even Christians can get caught up in “storing up riches” for
themselves, forgetting that this life is not a destination, but a journey. The
best education, the nicest house, the greatest vacations, the coolest car, we
can be tempted to spend so much time making this life comfortable that we
forget that we are only on a journey, and that heaven is our real destination.
On an airline flight we might bring
a few things to make us as comfortable as possible, but when we recognize that
the trip will soon be over, we don’t waste our time on overwhelming luxury,
because we know that the trip will be over soon. In the same way we as
believers can endure a little
discomfort,
preferring to spend most of our time and treasure with the end of the trip in
mind, because we know what awaits us at the destination: A time of rest, an
eternity of joy, and a place at our Father’s table.
We all want what is best for our
children. But perhaps we need to look more carefully at what that is. Is it more
important to make the soccer game on Sunday or make worship? Will our family
benefit more from that new flat screen TV or from volunteer time in the
community or at church? Do our priorities in life reflect God’s importance or
our own self-importance? Do we spend more time teaching our children that this
life matters most, or that the One who gives us eternal life matters most?
May God help us to never make the
mistake of preparing only for the journey and not the destination. After all,
that man in Max’s story would eventually have to get off of the plane, no
matter how comfortable he was. We too, will one day be finished with our
journey. Are you and your family ready to depart the “plane” and enter into the
eternal home prepared by Jesus for you?
"Do not store up
for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where
thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and
steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. - Matthew
6:19-21

Zion Track Season
We are starting open
practices for school track on Tuesday, April 13th from 3-4:30 p.m.
Practices will be held outside. Typically these practices culminate in a single
WELS area schools track meet at HVL, but we are still working out the details
and will share them when available. Track practice is open to both girls and
boys, grades 3-8. Mr. Nielsen will send out a letter with details this week.
2021-2022 School Enrollment
Letters were sent home several
weeks ago with 2021-22 enrollment information. In order to aid in our planning,
we ask that all families planning to enroll for the fall begin their
registration process. School families should have received an email invitation
from TADS last week to register for the new school year. If you have any questions, please contact Mr.
Schneck.
We are currently
enrolling new students for the 2021-2022 school year as well. If you know of any family
or friends who may be interested in our school program, please share our
information with them, or invite them to visit our website. If they are
willing, you can also give their contact information to Mr. Schneck and we will
reach out to them. Thank you!
The Zion CEA Auction is this Sunday, April 18th!
We still need volunteers
to help on or before Sunday in a variety of tasks. An email was sent out with a
link to our CEA Auction Sign-Up Genius page with details on needed help. You
can access the page at this address:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090b45aba82fa0f58-zion8
The auction starts at 12:30 p.m. This will be
an outdoor (tent) event. Food will not be served by Zion, but The Meat Guys food truck will be on hand
to provide food for purchase, with a portion of their sales going to Zion. You
may also bring a picnic lunch if you wish.
We will send out a flyer to share more details
about the event in the next few days.
Questions? Contact Amy Vanisacker in the
church/school office.
The Zion
School Musical, It’s Cool in the Furnace,
is in two weeks!
A
note was sent home a few weeks ago with details on needed costume basics for
students in grades K-8. Students will need a solid color oversized
t-shirt with no patterns or printing on it. The t-shirt should reach down to
(or past) their knees. Any color will do, but bright colors will look better.
The students should also have sandals or flip-flops to wear. These can be any
color or style as well, but avoid ones with flowers or decorations glued to
them, if possible. We will provide cloth sashes for the students.
We are still looking for volunteer
parents and family members to assist with making costume accessories and sets
for the production. Please speak to Mr. Schneck or one of the other teachers if
you are interested.
Students should have their costume
materials at school by Friday, April 16th.
Our performances will
be on Friday, April 23rd at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 24th
at 10:30 a.m. We will be presenting the
musical outdoors in our event tent.
